{"id":10930,"date":"2022-04-05T15:08:44","date_gmt":"2022-04-05T13:08:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mio.one\/blog\/women-in-the-advertising-industry-female-role-models-in-advertising\/"},"modified":"2026-07-09T10:31:09","modified_gmt":"2026-07-09T08:31:09","slug":"women-in-the-advertising-industry-female-role-models-in-advertising","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mio.one\/en\/blog\/women-in-the-advertising-industry-female-role-models-in-advertising\/","title":{"rendered":"Women in the Advertising Industry: Female Role Models in Advertising"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Now that March 8 has come and gone, we\u2019re not going to criticize the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hmg.eu\/pinkwashing\/\"> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">purplewashing<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">from certain brands. Nor the well-executed ideas from certain agencies that don\u2019t have a single woman in a creative director role on their staff\u2014no\u2026 What we\u2019re going to look at, briefly, are some female role models in advertising whom I wish I\u2019d known about before writing this blog post. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Yes, to write this article about female role models in advertising, I had to do some research\u2014quite a bit of it, actually\u2014but not because I lacked knowledge of advertising history; when I asked other colleagues in the industry, they said they\u2019d had the same experience.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The names that come to mind when we think of leading figures in advertising are men\u2019s. Women in the past were almost the exception, since the advertising industry was completely dominated by men until very recently. Or even today, as the platform says    <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/unadedos.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">According to unadedos, only 22% of creative director positions in Spain are held by women.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Since it&#8217;s quite possible that you&#8217;re in the same position as I am\u2014unaware of this (as are the vast majority of people in the industry)\u2014,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Let&#8217;s meet some of the trailblazing women in the history of advertising.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/miogroup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/imagen-1-206x300-2.jpg\" width=\"206\" height=\"300\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1480 alignnone size-full\" style=\"margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The first woman to pursue a career in advertising was <\/span><b>Mathilde C. Weil,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> a pioneer who, in 1880, also founded the first advertising agency created by a woman. <\/span> <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Household purchasing decisions were made by women, which is why advertisers began to focus on creating messages from a woman&#8217;s perspective.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The first woman in U.S. history to conceive and implement nationwide advertising campaigns was <\/span><b>Helen Landsdowne Resor. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She revolutionized the industry with her campaign <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe skin you love to touch\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  for Woodbury cosmetic soap, which led his agency to exceed $100 million in revenue in 1927. Furthermore, long before the term   <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rae.es\/damer\/sororidad\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">sorority<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was part of our vocabulary played a decisive role in the inclusion of women in advertising, as she used her power to hire and support the talent of others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As much as we love our work, it is a job\u2014that is, we get paid for it\u2014and that\u2019s why, in addition to their campaigns, I want to mention <\/span><b>Bernice Fitz-Gibbon,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> a copywriter who got her start in the 1920s and went on to become the highest-paid woman in the industry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Advertising is made for people and by people, <\/span><b>Shirley Polykoff <\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She knew this well and drew inspiration from her own experience to create her campaigns for Clairol, a hair dye brand. At that time, dyeing your hair was very frowned upon; she had experienced this firsthand when her mother-in-law criticized her. Her campaigns, such as    <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIf I only had one life\u2026 let me live it as a blonde!\u201d or<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Is it true\u2026 that blondes have more fun?\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> were very well known and led the brand to success.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/miogroup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/imagen-2.jpg\" width=\"250\" height=\"293\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1476 alignnone size-full\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/miogroup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/imagen-3-203x300.jpg\" width=\"203\" height=\"300\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1475 alignnone size-medium\" style=\"float: right\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Years later, she became vice president of her agency, and in 1973 she founded her own.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Advertising Hall of Fame<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  honors individuals who have left their mark on the industry through their work and innovations. In 1952, the first woman was honored,   <\/span><b>Erma Perham Proetz.<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You&#8217;re probably familiar with the famous campaign <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI Love New York\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> launched in 1975\u2014its creator was a woman,<\/span><b> Jane Maas. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Furthermore, some people believe that the character of Peggy Olson from the series <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mad Men <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">is inspired by her.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/miogroup.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/imagen-4-300x156.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"156\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1474 alignnone size-medium\" style=\"margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As you&#8217;ve seen so far, most of the female advertisers we&#8217;ve mentioned worked on accounts for women&#8217;s products, but that wasn&#8217;t the case with Jane. She was the first woman to join the creative team at American Express Travel, an account that, to this day, consists exclusively of men. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jane Maas, among many other things, was also a writer: in 1976, she published her first book, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.es\/How-Advertise-Kenneth-Roman\/dp\/0312318596\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cHow to Advertise,\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">  in collaboration with a coworker. And in 2011, he wrote   <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.casadellibro.com\/libro-mad-women\/9788426421227\/2020371\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mad Women:<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> The Other Side of Life on Madison Avenue in the \u201960s and Beyond.\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I recommend this book if reading this post has made you want to learn more about the perspective of women in advertising agencies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And what about Spain? To talk about influential women in Spanish advertising, we have to fast-forward to the present day; it wasn\u2019t until the 2000s that the first female Chief Creative Officers began to appear in Spain;   <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/uschi-henkes-0406b216\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Uschi Henkes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/eva-conesa-b654361a\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Eva Conesa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and the person mentioned in the title <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/monikmoro\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">M\u00f3nica Moro<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I hope future generations don\u2019t have to go through what I\u2019ve gone through.
